Welcome Addresses:

Dear colleagues and friends of the Baltic-German Symposium,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 24th Baltic-German Symposium, which will take place from May 24-28 in Riga, Latvia together with the 6th symposium of the Baltic IAP division. The annual jointly organized meeting with our colleagues and friends from the three Baltic States has already become a fixe point in the schedule and represents an important and continuous activity of our division. This year’s program, which has been jointly set up with the president of the Baltic division, Sergejs Isajevs covers interesting and major topics of diagnostic pathology. Lectures and seminars on skin, breast, lung pathology and gynecological cytopathology presented by excellent speakers offer a broad and interesting spectrum for our continuous medical education. Major goals of this symposium are to meet as colleagues and friends, to share experience and novelties in the field and to enjoy the scientific program.
I would like to encourage all friends of this symposium who have been joining it for many years to be on board also this time and to gain new fellows for our journey among our large number of members. Visiting and enjoy-ing Riga with its architecture and culture represents every time a new and special experience. Attending a perfor-mance at the Riga opera house is always a highlight of our visit. This year’s journey will also lead us to interesting sites outside of Riga such as Sigulda, Turaida, Gauja Na-tional Park and to Rundale Palace and Bauska Castle in the South of Latvia.

I am very grateful to Martina Schmidt, the managing direc-tor of our division for taking care of this project since so many years. Her continuous endeavor and support makes our journey and the meeting to a real pleasure. I also would like to thank the Baltic-German Medical Association and its chairman Reinhard Büttner for support.

I wish you an interesting and safe journey and pleasant time!

With my best wishes,

Prof. Dr. Sigurd F. Lax
President German Division of the IAP

Dear Friends and Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemens.
It is a great honor and privilege to hold the 24. Baltic-German Symposium for Pathology of the German Division of IAP, Inc. and the 6th Symposium of the Baltic IAP Division in Riga, Latvia, from May 24-28, 2017.
Similar like in the previous years, the lectures will be given by the distinguished pathologists from the Germany and UK. In addition, the exhibition from the industry is planned during the meeting.
In this meeting we have introduced the oral presentation sessions by pathologists and pathologists in training from Baltic countries. Furthermore, the best three presentations will be awarded by the prize.
26 years from now in 1991 the three Baltic countries – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – regained their independence and Baltic pathologists started to gather under the umbrella of Baltic-German symposium for pathology. This year Baltic-German symposium celebrates its 24th Anniversary. This is a time for us to look back and remember, and to look forward and continue.
There have been many achievements in the pathology field in the Baltic country. There are many things we have changed our specialty dramatically – innovations and dis-coveries. In 2016 with the kind support of the Ministry of Health and three main clinical University Hospitals (Riga East University Hospital, P. Stradins Clinical University hospitals and Children University Hospital) the new diag-nostic and research techiques are planned to be imple-mented in the frame of State Pathology Centre of Latvia.

I am very grateful to Martina Schmidt, Prof. Sigurd Lax and Prof. Reinhard Büttner for support.
You are kindly welcome to the 24. Baltic-German Sympo-sium for Pathology of the German Division of IAP, Inc. and the 6th Symposium of the Baltic IAP Division in Riga, Latvia, from May 24-28, 2017.

Excursion to Bauska, Rundale palace and museum

The Rundale Palace is set amidst the fertile Zemgale Plains in the south of Latvia. Most of the interior decora-tions were created between 1765 and 1768 when the sculptor Johann Michael Graff from Berlin and the Italian painters Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi from St. Pe-tersburg worked at the palace.
The Bauska Castle represents an example of military ar-chitecture from the period from the 15th to the 17th century. Its oldest part is the only Livonian Order fortress built especially for the use of firearms, but the newest part – a residential castle fortified with bastions, protective walls and earthen ramparts.
