Welcome Note

Essential Diagnostic Topics of Bone Marrow Pathology with Focus on Myeloid Neoplasms

As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 5th Winter Course on Hematopathology organized by the International Academy of Pathology, German Division (IAP GD) is now scheduled from March 31 to April 1st, 2023 at the IAP GD Training Center in Bonn, Germany.  Members of the faculty are internationally renowned experts in hematopathology with special focus on myeloid neoplasms. The course is a hybrid educational event that may be attended in person or virtually. Interactive microscopy sessions are not available for remote attendees.

The course comprises two parts for which separate registration options are available. Part 1 on March 31, 2023, provides content mostly relevant to the interests of a broad audience including trainees. The goal is to outline the best current diagnostic approaches to trephine bone marrow biopsy specimens and to the cytologic evaluation of aspirate smears. The educational sessions of part one will be presented in German. Exceptions are the Meet the Expert Session delivered by Prof. Attilio Orazi in English and the final bilingual German/English discussion.

Part 2 scheduled April 1st, 2023, is designed to be of special interest to an audience actively involved in hematopathology. The second part of the course will provide state-of-the-art overviews on the landscape of myeloid neoplasms (MNs) in English. The classification of MNs has undergone a remarkable transformation in the past year. The introduction by Prof. Dan A. Arber will highlight actual challenges and controversies between the International Consensus Classification (ICC) and the World Health Classification (WHO) of myeloid neoplasm.  Topics discussed by the faculty include among others acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), MDS/MPN, refractory cytopenia, pediatric MDS and other germline mutation associated disorders , mastocytosis,  myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and tyrosine kinase fusions (MLN/eo) and the essential molecular diagnostic work-up of myeloid neoplasms.

Both part 1 and part 2 include interactive microscopy sessions and case-based approaches.

At the end of the course, the in-person and the remote participants are encouraged to activelyparticipate in the discussion with all speakers.

The IAP GD supports German and international pathologists‘ commitment to continuing education and will be pleased to welcome you to the 5th Winter Course Hematopathology.
