In lung cancer diagnostics cytology plays a major role as in more than 70% of the patients the disease is in an advanced stage on primary diagnosis and a resection is not an option for most of the patients. Therefore all the required diagnostic assays –morphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostics – have to be done on small biopsies and cytological samples. In many institutions a combined approach is used in endoscopy with obtaining biopsy material and cytological samples (FNA, brushings, washings) during one session. In this tutorial we present microscopy workshops on respiratory cytology followed by special lectures on differential diagnosis of lung cancer and on recent developments and practical solutions for molecular assays in lung cancer.
Head and neck lesions are easily sampled by fine needle aspiration. In many cases this very simple procedure enables the clinician to plan further clinical work-up and therapy. In some cases a definitive preoperative diagnosis can be reached by cytology alone. In this tutorial microscopy workshops on thyroid, salivary gland, and lymph node cytopathology are presented. Special lectures on the general approach to FNA, and on two new systems for terminology and classification, the Bethesda System for thyroid cytopathology and the Milan Classification for salivary gland cytopathology, will broaden the scope of the tutorial.
On both days, microscopy workshops with collections of teaching slides will enable the participants to enlarge their practical diagnostic expertise in these important fields of cytopathology.
The course is limited to 63 participants.
