Founded in 2008 on the initiative of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Martin-Leo Hansmann, the International Junior Academy is designed for pathologists in training who wish to expand their expertise and gain insights into the latest scientific developments.

The Academy places a strong emphasis on practical continuing education. Alongside expert lectures, participants have the opportunity to present innovative research findings, discuss current issues, and explore new diagnostic and scientific approaches. To ensure an intensive and rewarding exchange between participants and speakers, attendance is limited to approximately 30–40 people.

Since 2013, the Summer School has been organized in cooperation with the British Division of the IAP, and since 2025 with the French Division of the IAP. In addition to the scientific programme, personal interaction is a central part of the event. Participants can share their experiences, learn from one another, and build valuable professional connections with colleagues from around the world.

The first events took place in the Monastery Johannisberg. Since 2011 the event takes place alternately in the training center of the German Division of the IAP in Bonn and outside Germany:
